In mid-October of 2008 90 (Speke) Squadron of the Air Cadets won their Regional Drill Competition for the first time in their history! The team, who’d been practicing extensively since early February swept through the ‘Merseyside Wing’ and ‘Wales and West’ Competitions, to further represent the region at the Air Training Corps National Drill Competition in mid - November.
The Squadron’s Drill Team, led by Cadet Warrant Officer Jordan Jones represented the Squadron for the first time at the National Finals held in a large workshop hangar at RAF Halton in Buckinghamshire. The display, marked by Drill Instructors from the Recruit Training Squadron and the world renowned Queen’s Colour Squadron (as seen on TV) highlighted the attention to detail required for such a prestigious competition.
Standards were evidently high from the performances of the team’s prior to Speke’s display. The drill sequence, which consisted of a number of turns and manoeuvres, was performed with great precision while being observed by the Commandant of the Air Cadet Organisation, Air Commodore I R W Stewart RAF.
“It was a very nerve-wracking experience, but the most rewarding one I’ve done in the ATC so far “ explained Cadet Michael Threlfall. The Commanding Officer of 90 Squadron Flight Lieutenant Brown added, “ I’m incredibly proud of the team. To win their Wing competition for two successive years and progress through the Region competition to come 3rd at National Level is an outstanding achievement. They are a symbol of how enthusiasm and hard work can result in vast progress in the Air Training Corps ”.
